Ballet Costumes
There are many different styles of ballet costumes. They can vary from simple, flowing, chemises to ornate, themed costumes. The style of costume will depend entirely on the purpose of the ballet.
Ballet costume choices are limitless. Brands like Capezio, Bloch, and Leo's are available to everyone at stores like these.
Putting together a costume has become easier compared to when costumes always had to be bought through the studio at a high mark up.
If the dancers will be performing a ballet such as the Nutcracker, the tradition and theme of the ballet will dictate the costume. For example, the female dancers in the party scene will be wearing traditional party dresses, while the Sugar Plum Fairy will be dressed in a very whimsical, fun tutu-styled costume. Female dancers in a ballet such as Romeo & Juliet would wear flowing, romantic dress, as dictated by the period in which the ballet is set.
If the ballet is a contemporary one, the costumes will reflect the feel of the music or the meaning in the story. These costumes can be any number of things-from flowy gowns to simple leotards to street clothes.
For children's costumes, the dance instructor personal taste will dictate the clothing. These costumes will follow the same guidelines (be dictated by the theme, music, etc), however they will typically come with some assembly required. Straps may need to be attached, sequins may need to be tacked on...no worries, though! This work is usually VERY simple and can be handled by even the most novice seamstress.
Many of the ballet costumes will have elastic straps that need to be attached to the shoulders. If the straps are being sewn on for functionality, not appearance, they can be soaked in tea until they are dyed a nude color. From the audience, they won't even be noticed! If the dancer will be performing in a number of routines, straps may be attached with snaps to expedite quick costume changes.
