However, in some pre-professional classes, the color of the leotard will be determined by the level of the class the student is attending. Male students will typically wear a fitted shirt and tights for class. Other options for male dancers are the straight, black jazz pants and the unitard.
Female dancers can build on those basics by wearing a ballet wrap sweater or a wrap skirt. Leg warmers or knit pants may also be seen in the classroom. If a dancer has back to back classes, (i.e. Ballet and then Contemporary), the dancer may cut holes in the bottom of their full length tights. When the dancer is done with their ballet class, they can simply roll up the foot part of the tight so that they are barefoot and ready to go for contemporary.
Ballet instructors are usually far more strict and conservative with the students attire than most other styles of dance. In most other dance classes, the student will be allowed , to wear different color leotards or different patterns, etc. For ballroom classes, the female students will practice the dances in longer skirts.
Unitards are another bodywear option, usually seen more in jazz and contemporary classes than in ballet. In hip hop classes, the attire usually consists of a fitted tee and baggy knit pants.
