There are lots of tango shoes for you to choose from. The quality of a pair of dancing shoes can vary greatly from brand to brand. With dancing shoes, you usually get what you pair for in terms of quality and comfort for your feet. With that said, here's out first tip.
Cheap does not mean inexpensive, however. Of course if your favorite shoe store is having a sale on a pair of high quality shoes that you adore, you should buy them.
Cheap shoes will hurt your feet and will require a much longer "break in" period. During the break in period you feet will hurt during and after dancing.
Never buy a pair of pair of tango shoes that have large chunky heels. Or even worse a tiny tapered heel that does not give your foot good stability.
You'll being dancing backwards quite a bit when performing the tango. A large chunky heel will easily get caught on the dance floor as you are moving quickly backwards and changing directions.
A heel that is too small will not offer your foot the stability that it needs for dancing. Small heels should never be worn even if they are not a perfect match for your production's dance costumes. The worst thing that could possibly happen is that your ankle rolls over while dancing and you are no longer able to perform the tango for the rest of the night or longer.
Never wear tango shoes with a rubber bottom or outsole. Shoes with rubber bottoms are not safe dancing shoes! When you dance the tango you change direction a lot while sliding your feet across the dance floor.
If your shoe grips the floor during a change in direction you can injure a knee very badly. It is not uncommon for dancers wearing improper shoes to torque their knees. This happens when they are moving across the dance floor and their foot suddenly sticks to the floor while their body keeps moving in the direction that they were dancing in.
